Mom's Invention Woman invented 'the Easy Measure' to help her daughter's homework.
In the summer of 2004, Meiko was looking at her daughter, who was having trouble measuring for curved line with a plastic ruler for her fashion design assignments at their house. "This is the 21st century, there is a better ruler somewhere," Meiko thought. Her and her daughter went to material stores, art stores and everywhere they could think of to find the one they need. "But, there was none, " Meiko said. If she was an average mom, she would have given up finding a better ruler. But Meiko wasn't. She simply thought if there is no better ruler out there, let's just make one. That was the beginning of her long journey as an inventor. Meiko soon began to conceive the idea of her unique ruler, later named, "The Easy Measure," and approached a few patent attorneys. "They said they can get a patent for me, but they don't do after that in the market, so I researched companies who can help me because I'm working fulltime, and I don't have time to do marketing," she said.
After several researches, she found a company, called Invention Technologies, Inc., a Coral Gables, Florida-based firm that handles the publicity and public relations for inventors' products. "They have patent attorneys. They will get a patent and also they will help me to get a license and manufacture," she said. "I never thought I would do things like this," she said. Her invention, "The Easy Measure," guarantees that the measuring of curved or wavy line is done easily and accurately. Its value and versatility allows it to be used in other fields as well, such as architecture and interior design, according to Invention Technologies, Inc. Currently, no product photos, prototypes or graphic illustration of the design are available until a licensing agreement and patent protection has been secured. Meiko and the company are now seeking manufacturers interested in licensing the design and bringing this new product to the market.
Meiko is hoping to have the Easy Measure in full production and available to the public in the very near future. "I cannot wait," Meiko said. "If we make this, I want to buy it first of all." Although the price for the product is up to the negotiation between a manufacture and Meiko, she is considering $50 to $70 for a regular design, she said. In addition, she is also thinking of one that would work with a computer, which may cost little bit more. She is brim over with new, interesting ideas. "I already have a lot of ideas, but it is step by step," she said.
