Brandon Trucker Finds Invention On The Job: ALARM TO KEEP DRIVERS ALERT

With licensing and patent agreements still pending, Robert K., a truck driver believes he's invented a device will cut down on truck-related accidents and help sleep-deprived truck drivers get the rest they need. "I see three or four accidents every day," said Robert. "I once saw a whole family wiped out." Robert's Alarm Alert was conceived after spending 27 years on the road. While he said he can't go into details about the device, yet, but he said it is designed to give truckers the rest they need while they are waiting to load and unload cargo or waiting for another assignment. "Drivers are tired," he said. "This device can stop that and bring the trucking business into the 21st century." Robert said drivers are allowed by law to travel 11 straight hours at a time and that adds up to many tired drivers.

Coral Gables-based Invention Technologies Inc., which helped him put together a prototype, is now helping him locate a manufacturer. A spokeswoman for the company said only 2 percent of all inventions reach the market but believes Kelly's device has a lot of potential because of safety concerns in the transportation industry. "Really, it's a very physically demanding job, being stuck in a seat driving 10 to 14 hours," said Invent-Tech's spokeswoman. "It's very easy to fall asleep." Kelly hopes his device eventually will become part of government guidelines for the industry.
