Invention makes clean cut for hairdressers

Cassie S. has been cutting hair since the age of 11 and now, as a student in cosmetology school, she has come up with an invention that is sure to make a clean cut for hairdressers. The Straight Safe Cut has been developed by Cassie, who began to conceive the idea this past spring while in training at a cosmetology school. The art of professional hair styling is one that requires more skill than what might appear. Not only is there the need to get the style exactly the way the customer wants, but there are even hazards involved in the cutting of hair. For example, a hair stylist can accidentally cut her/her fingers and have blood unintentionally introduced onto the customer's scalp. Cassie believes she has come up with a simple, yet effective solution to this common problem.

The invention's unique design guarantees that the fingers of a hairstylist are thoroughly protected. It prevents injury and the potential for the hairdresser's blood to come into contact with the customer's scalp hair. "It serves two purposes," said Cassie. "It protects the fingers and helps keep hair straight for a straighter cut." Cassie is a senior at a cosmetology school with 500 hours of training left. She has been going there for the past year and four months. "I had no means to go to beauty school before," said Cassie, who has a 12-year-old daughter. The 1992 high school graduate worked at a sales and leasing company for a year and a half before enrolling at beauty college. I've always wanted to go to school," said Cassie, who works in a salon at the school, receiving hands-on training. "I have been going part-time because of getting my daughter to and from school." In addition to working with hair, Cassie said she likes to spend a lot of time with her family, go bike riding and play ball.

Helping her with her proposed solution is Invention Technologies Inc. "I was watching TV one night and saw a commercial first," she said. "I wrote down the number and kept it. Then I came up with this idea, called them and they sent me a packet." This original idea is now being made available for licensing to manufacturers interested in new product development, especially in the hair care accessories industry. Cassie is hoping to have the Straight Safe Cut in full production and available to the public within the very near future. "If my product sells, I will be opening up my own salon," she said. Her husband has been supportive of her career choice, and her father provided some money for the marketing and is in partnership with her. Cassie, also the daughter of Jane P., named her new invention.

"There's nothing on the market like it yet that serves the same purpose," Cassie said. "I'm excited about it. I hope it goes soon." Then, if it does, she just may have a couple of more ideas to introduce from the cosmetology perspective.
