Young father invents alarm for babies in cars
Only last week, the headlines called attention to another tragic incident. A 22-month-old toddler died of heat suffocation, forgotten in his parent’s car.
It was reading about a similar incident last year that brought Priscilla V. to tears. Many times, parents or caregivers inadvertently leave a child unattended, leading to tragic results.
Jose J. shared his wife’s pain when she said, “somebody has to do something!” But Priscilla V. didn’t quite expect that it was her husband who would be the one to do it.
“My wife was pregnant and she told me it would be great if there were a device that prevented this tragedy from happening. That night I started working on it,” he recalled.
Jose researched the Internet to see if any such device existed. The couple knew there was technology available for all kinds of alarm systems, why not one that would remind parents that the baby is still in the car?
This led the Jose to invent the Baby Alarm. The unique product reminds the driver that a child is in the back seat of a vehicle. It has the additional benefit that in order to function, it requires the driver to use a seat belt as well.
While he was drawing up the designs and working out the invention’s bugs, he saw an add on television for Invention Technologies, a Florida company that helps inventors.
“I talked it over with them and sent them my drawings.” Jose said. “They like it. We’ve been working together ever since.”
Invention Technologies has created digital renderings of the product, a prototype and a video to explain the product to manufacturers. The company, which is naturally close-mouthed about how the invention works, is seeking a manufacturer. Once they secure a licensing agreement with the manufacturer and the product moves from the conceptual stage to the real thing, Jose will be issued the patent.
A financial advisor by day, Jose said the Baby Alarm is designed to be safe, easy to use and can be installed in a breeze. He is hoping the cost will fall between $25 and $50 to make it some of the most affordable insurance out there.
“If it saves one life,” said Jose, “then we have done well.”
Jose is hoping to have the Baby Alarm in full production and available to the public in the very near future.
