Inventor hopes design will deter deer stand trespassers

Glenn P. likes to hunt, so when he learned that someone had been trespassing on his deer stand, he felt something had to be done.
In 12 hours, he had fashioned a lockout device for deer stand ladders.
“I designed this product to where it keeps people from climbing the stands,” Glenn said.
Glenn said he has had deer stands vandalized, even stolen, so there was clearly a need for some sort of locking device.
Presently, Glenn is working through Invent-Tech to find someone to license his Deer Stand Lock Out, as it is currently being called.
“Pretty much what we’re doing is we’re trying to look for a manufacturer to license the invention,” said Steven Amoldovar, publicist for Invent-Tech.
Glenn said there have been newspaper reports of hunters who have been killed in confrontations with trespassers. “You don’t know who’s in your stand,” he said. “If you have it locked off, you don’t have that risk of being shot off your own stand.”
Tim Updegrove, a sales representative for Sportsman’s Depot, said he has heard of vandalism and thefts of deer stands and that Glenn’s creation is “a good idea.”
Glenn said his invention is not just for deer stands but for any structure that has a ladder attached.
“You can use it in the industrial world, say, like on water towers, inspection ladders like KCS,” he said. “You’ve heard of kids on water towers, people killed over the years. It just restricts access to all kinds of ladders that sit on scaffolding. It’s a real functional piece of equipment.”
Inventing things is nothing new for Glenn. He worked for nine years “helping with prototype equipment, engineering, testing, welding, manufacturing parts for them.”
He is now employed at a place where he does “pretty much the same thing. I do welding and add inventions and stuff to their equipment—not inventions but engineered stuff to put on them, like GPS equipment.”
He said he has his own workshop where he works on various projects.
“I build all types of things,” he said. “I can walk up to any piece of equipment, and I can improve it or add something to it to make it better. That’s just the way I am.”
